Founded by Joe Colker in the years before World War II, this homegrown company has kept sight of its roots. Joe started out by traveling up and down the Ohio River, selling light bulbs out of the back of his station wagon. After leaving to serve our country in its time of need, he and his brother Herb Colker grew the business into a full-line electrical distributorship.
The young company grew under the brothers' guidance but not without a few bumps along the way. The infamous 1937 Ohio River flood engulfed the W.Va. Electric Supply Co. building to the point that Joe worried the business would be lost. But when Huntington's St. Mary's Hospital needed flashlights and heaters, Joe knew he had the stock on an upper floor of the building. Swimming underwater, he climbed up, retrieved the products and loaded them into a rowboat from a second-story window.
Years later, on Memorial Day weekend, Joe was shocked to learn that his store was on fire when he saw the building on the local news. Joe and Herb rushed to the store and found the building and inventory sustained serious damage. Yet the company was saved by the loyalty of its customers and neighbors. Customers responded with an outpouring of advice, well-wishes, and early payments, helping the company to once again land on its feet.
Today, W.Va. Electric Supply Co. is proud of its past and excited for its future. Jared Colker is the current president, having entered the business following the stewardship of Joe's brother Herb and Joe's sons Matt and Lee Colker. In addition, throughout the years, many of our employees have welcomed their own family members to come and work in the business. At present count, over ten percent of our employees have family members in the organization. Our company family prides itself on a true tradition of service.
